Virus Prevention

  • Ensure that all staff run windows XP as users not administrators.
  • Make sure all anti-virus software is updated daily.
  • Do not install any software without reading the license agreement. Research any software you are considering installing online - it may contain spyware or be a trojan.
  • Make sure that your anti-virus software checks all files every time they're opened.
  • Don't open e-mail attachments that you did not expect and don't know exactly what they are. Do all staff need to have access to email attachments? Prevent downloading of attachments on any machine where staff do not need access to attachments.
  • Consider scanning removing attachments at mail server level
  • When downloading files from the Internet, download only from reputable sites and scan the files before executing them.
  • Be careful exchanging disks and files between computers. Scan CD's and floppy disks before opening files.
  • If you use Microsoft Outlook (not Express) for e-mail, make sure that the "automatic preview" feature is disabled. You can find this option under the "View" menu.
  • Make sure that Microsoft Office macro virus protection is enabled.
  • Consider deinstalling Windows Scripting Host.
